A SERIOUS collision resulted in road closures and heavy traffic over the weekend.

At around 2.30pm on Saturday, March 23, two cars collided at the junction between Atherleigh Way and Kirkhall Lane, which has been a hotspot for crashes in recent years.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP), the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS), and the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) were called to the scene of the crash, with officers enforcing road closures and a cordon around the scene.

Residents reported news of the crash over the weekend as it caused heavy disruption and traffic delays around the area.

The road is reported to have been reopened around two hours later, at around 4.20pm.

The NWAS confirmed that they were called to the scene and have confirmed that one patient was taken to hospital, although no serious injuries have been reported.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At just before 3pm on Saturday, March 23, two fire engines from Leigh and Atherton fire stations plus the technical response unit from Leigh fire station attended a crash involving two cars on Atherleigh Way, Leigh.

“Crews worked alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service to make the scene safe and were in attendance for around 30 minutes.”
