BEN Reynolds is backing Kieron Purtill to become Leigh Centurions’ next permanent head coach.
Centurions face Sheffield Eagles at the Olympic Legacy Park on Sunday chasing a sixth consecutive league and cup victory under Purtill’s command.
There is no immediate sign of a successor to Neil Jukes who resigned after Leigh’s 32-26 home defeat to Toulouse Olympic.
Purtill’s latest win was a 68-10 defeat of Rochdale with half-back Reynolds scoring two tries and kicking 10 goals.
“Kieron has his own ways on how he wants to coach and they are working for us at the moment,” said Reynolds who returned to action against Hornets after missing the Easter Monday win over London Broncos through concussion.
“He has got his chance to overlook everything. He is a great bloke and a great coach.
“Obviously we don’t know what happens from here but Kieron is in charge at the moment and we will be doing what he says.
“We are just a group of lads who are all mates together. Whatever the owner and the club want to do it’s on them.
“But for the time being Kieron is our coach and everyone likes working with him and we are getting the job done.
“Hopefully, it might stay like that. Everyone buys in to what he says.”
Centurions’ run of wins has lifted them into fifth place and the early season upset is receding into the past.
“No trophies are won in January,” added Reynolds. “But Easter and the last month have been massive for us.
“It is a very competitive league and I don’t think people thought it would be quite as tight.
“We are not looking to the back end of the year just yet. It’s all about getting our consistency right and hopefully we will be in the right place at the right time.”
Reynolds also feels his partnership with Australian Drew Hutchison is starting to gel.
“It was never going to click straight away,” he explained. “Drew has come from a different country and a different club.
“So the combinations were going to take a while. But Drew and I are good friends off the field so it helps a lot if you like your half-back partner.”
On his personal contribution to Leigh’s fifth win in a row he added: ”I think the last time I scored so many points was for Castleford’s under 18s.
“But it was nice to get on the score sheet because I hadn’t scored for a while.”
