SPORTY youngsters from across the north west gathered at Leigh Sports Village for this year’s Greater Manchester Disability Games.
More than 400 disabled athletes aged between 11 and 16 were competing in a variety of sports at the event, which was organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, WLCT.
There was wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball and goalball as well as tag rugby, football and athletics.
Stuart Murray, WLCT’s chief executive, said: “Grass roots events like this really do highlight the amount of talented athletes in Greater Manchester.
“This is the fourth year we have held the games and it has grown each year.
“This time we delivered more sports than ever before with the introduction of wheelchair basketball and goalball.
“Wheelchair basketball has become really popular in the last few years, especially since the 2012 Paralympics, and like all the events it was hotly contested.”
Mayor of Wigan Clr Billy Rotherham said: “What a fantastic event this was and I thoroughly enjoyed watching our youngsters take part in the games. Their enthusiasm and energy was a joy to watch and I would like to say a big well done to all those who took part – they did their boroughs proud.”
Everyone who took part received a T-shirt and medal with trophies awarded to the winners in each sport.
