JUST days before bidding for glory in the Northern Rail Cup Final Leigh Centurions have had to battle against moves by the taxman to have the rugby club wound up at the High Court.
Top insolvency judge, Registrar Derrett, today formally dismissed the winding up petition brought against Sporting Club Leigh Ltd by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.
Matt Smith, counsel for HMRC requested that the petition be dismissed with an order for costs against the company, but gave no other details.
Had the club been compulsorily wound up, this would have effectively handed over the club's affairs to an Official Receiver.
His job would then have been to do his best to ensure that debts were paid off by selling any assets available and then bringing business to a close.
The club is currently fourth in the Championship table and on Saturday face Sheffield Eagles in the Northern Rail Cup final at Halifax.
