THE winners of the Journal’s Leigh Games competitions have been revealed.

We set pupils the task of designing a medal and writing about who has inspired them, and they didn’t disappoint.

The Journal was inundated with entries and judges had a difficult task choosing the winners.

Hayley Smith, editor of the Journal, said: “The Leigh Games was fantastic event to be part of and I’m delighted that so many schools got on board and entered into the spirit of the competition. We had some fantastic entries and were extremely impressed with the effort many pupils had put into their writing and medal designs.

“Congratulations to our winner and a huge thank you to everyone who took the time to take part.”

The winners will receive a prize for their school – 2,500 Morrisons Let’s Grow vouchers to spend on gardening or cooking equipment, while the pupils have won cinema tickets and refreshments courtesy of Cineworld in Leigh.

WHO INSPIRES YOU?

WINNER: Catlin Semple, aged eight, St Thomas CE Primary School, Leigh:

“It’s hard to choose who inspires me. Mostly though my nanna inspires me.

"My nanna is amazing she makes me better when I fall. When I was only one my nanna taught me how to walk and talk.

"I was riding my bike down a hill and I crashed into a lot of nettles. My nanna put vinegar on.
When I got home I went to bed and when I woke up all the bumps were gone. On that day I was so happy that my nanna was there.

"My nanna gives me 20 toffees when I leave her house. She sometimes babysits me. When she does she lets me stay up till 10pm.

"My nanna gives me hugs and kisses all the time. When I’m upset she sings me a song and dries my tears away.

"She teaches me how to spell for my spelling test. I love my nanna.”

WINNER: Abbie Bradshaw, Bedford High school:

“My mum inspires me. six years ago I nearly lost my mum due to cancer; she was a fighter and survived.

"I was only young and don’t remember much of it but I do remember my dad driving me and him to the hospital to see her. She wakes up every morning with a smile and carries on with her life after her experiences.

"She supports me when I need her and her shoulder is always there for me to cry on. She always gives me confidence in things I’m not sure on. Rarely she ever thinks of herself and she’s the funniest, prettiest, bravest fighter I have ever known.

"I honestly wouldn’t ask for another mum.”
