TRADERS on Leigh Market say they are ‘struggling’ to survive due to roadworks to build the guided busway.
Many say their takings are down 30 per cent and they have had to lay off staff because the roadworks and resulting traffic are discouraging shoppers from coming to the town centre.
Despite complaints to Wigan Council, they say little is being done to help them and some are not sure they will survive.
David West, who owns two fruit stalls in the market, said: “I’ve had to lay off staff because it is dead in here now. Everyone is struggling.
“The council said they would put signs up to let people know we are still open but they never have and we have asked for free parking while the work is being done but they have done nothing.”
Clive Rander who runs C and D Books, said there has been a noticeable decrease in the number of customers in the past three or four weeks ago and can only think it is down to the roadworks.
He also doubts the busway will benefit them in the long run.
“Lots of people in Leigh know about Manchester but who will want to come to Leigh?” he said.
Emma Barton, assistant director for economy at Wigan Council, said: “We appreciate the roadworks are causing some disruption in Leigh, though we have maintained access to the markets and the Spinning Gate car park throughout the works to reduce the impact.
“Once complete, the busway will bring huge economic benefits to Leigh and the surrounding area, supporting the local economy, including the market, by bringing new visitors and shoppers into the town.
“Temporary ‘business as usual’ signs will be installed later this week to signpost traffic around roadworks and to the car parks to avoid confusion.”
