RESIDENTS have spoken out over plans for a housing estate in Mosley Common.
A decision on Redrow Homes Ltd’s application to build 244 homes on the Garratt Hall estate is set to be made in July.
Residents have less than a month to put forward their objections to the proposed land between Tyldesley and Mosley Common, which neighbours Tyldesley Cemetery and the grade II listed Garrett Hall.
The 28-acre plot will be on land currently used for grazing and was identified by Wigan Council as ‘appropriate for housing development’.
Objections have been raised in relation to fears over traffic congestion and road safety, as well as a loss of open space and impact on neighbouring properties.
Commenting on Facebook group Tyldesley Together, resident Nick Hardman said: “No investment is planned either by the local authority or Redrow to provide better community facilities with this development.
“Wigan has in effect closed the local baths and library, these only being saved by a fantastic group of people who have fought and worked hard to keep these open.
“They need a wake-up call regarding these new homes and we need assurances that the money they have made/will make will be ploughed back into Mosley Common and Tyldesley.”
But Chris Lewis said she was supportive of plans for more homes.
"Houses are too expensive, so we need more houses to make them affordable,” she said.
"More people creating a bigger local economy will mean more local investment in roads, schools, hospitals etc.
“Most people getting benefits are in low paid jobs. If you can bring in more and better jobs it means less is spent on benefits.
"Doctors and dentists are businesses, they go where the customers are like any other business."
