THE borough's top performing high schools have been revealed in the publication of new league tables.
The Department for Education released its annual school league tables yesterday, Thursday, with Golborne High School coming out on top in the area that the Journal covers.
The report displays the Progress 8 scores- which monitors the improvements pupils have made from the end of Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4 based on eight subjects including English, maths and science.
The figures are compared to other pupils across England who got similar scores at the end of Key Stage 2.
The Lowton Road school was the only one which finished above average.
Five schools were ranked below average in the report.
Atherton Community School and Westleigh High School were ranked well below average.
As a whole, Wigan borough school's were ranked as below average with a Progress 8 score of -0.15, compared to a national average score of -0.03.

The overall results of how high school pupils have scored in eight qualifications- the attainment 8 score- was slightly below the national average for state-funded schools.
Alan Lindsay, assistant director for education at the council, said: “We are very pleased with the latest secondary school performance tables reflecting the outcomes from last summer’s GCSE examinations, which once again highlight the overall good attainment levels of pupils across Wigan Borough.
“These results show that Wigan schools have an overall Attainment 8 score of 46.1, which places us in line with the national average for state-funded schools and is really positive news.
“I would like to thank our school staff, parents and particularly the students for their hard work, encouragement and commitment to raising the education bar here in Wigan Borough.
"We will continue to work hard to make sure that all our children and young people have access to the best education possible.”
