A COUPLE with more than 50 years of commitment to Leigh Harriers have been awarded a prestigious Believe Star at the Town Hall.

Since 2011, Believe Star Awards have been handed out to "important people" across the borough in recognition of their career accomplishments, commitment to the community, and the positive change they have instilled.

With more than 50 years of experience between them at Leigh Harriers, Joe and Margaret Galvin were the latest recipients of the Award, which was unveiled at Leigh Town Hall this morning (Monday, February 21).

The first married couple to receive the award, Joe and Margaret were recognised for their dedication and commitment to the young people, budding athletes, and future Olympians in Leigh.

Creating a competitive and supportive environment for young people to succeed, it was noted how the pair "touched the lives and made a difference" to many athletes over the years.

Olympic silver medallist Keely Hodgkinson, who took home the 800m gold medal at the Muller Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham over the weekend, was highlighted as one of the success stories who has been coached at the athletics club over the years.

With Leigh Harriers in operation for more than 100 years, Joe and Margaret explained that the move from their former premises on Charles Street to Leigh Sports Village has allowed the club to extend its operation for many more years to come.

As well as accomodating the athletics club, the "fantastic facilities" at the Sports Village has allowed the centre to become a real community hub in Leigh, with many sports teams and local groups also using the space.

Joe said this collaboration of local groups has allowed the Harriers to become "more involved in the local community" and help athletes "on the path to success in whatever they want to do".

Receiving the accolade in front of their family, the Mayor of Wigan Borough Yvonne Klieve and other councillors, Margaret said it was "truly amazing" that a Believe Star will be laid in recognition of their efforts.

Margaret said: "Joe and I are delighted and honoured to receive a Star Award.

"We were taken aback as we are not the usual recipients of the award, and to be laid next to the other recipients is truly amazing."

She added: "We want to thank all of the volunteers who spend hours and hours to make Leigh Harriers the best it can be."
