IN February, central government announced a national council tax rebate to help towards energy bills.
Every eligible household across the country is set to receive £150 this spring as a result.
Legally, the government has set a requirement that all councils must make these rebate payments to all eligible residents from April 2022 and by September 2022 latest.
Here’s a borough-by-borough run down of when you can expect to receive the funds:
In Bolton, those paying by direct debit can expect to get their rebate paid to them automatically between April and May 2022.
For those living in Bury, they can also expect to get their council tax rebate between April and May 2022.
The council said it will get in contact directly with those it doesn’t hold bank details for – in other words, those who don’t pay their council tax by direct debit.
Manchester residents will get their rebate payment automatically if they pay by direct debit by April 22 2022.
Those who don’t pay by direct debit will receive a letter from the council detailing how to apply for the rebate payment. These letters are due to be sent from April 25.
Oldham residents are being encouraged by their council to sign up for direct debit payments if possible to get their rebate payment sooner.
Those that have a direct debit with the council will get their payment from May 2022. Those who don’t will be contacted directly by the council to arrange payment.
The authority has warned this will likely take much longer.
In Rochdale, those paying council tax by direct debit are due to get the payment between April and May 2022.
The council has said it will arrange alternative payment methods for those who don’t pay their council tax via direct debit and will announce how this will be done ‘in the coming weeks’ on its website.
For Salford residents, those paying by direct debit will be sent the rebate automatically after they have paid their April 2022 council tax installment.
For those who don’t pay this way, letters will be sent out to them by early May 2022 inviting them to apply for the rebate.
Stockport council is set to be paying its residents the rebate from May 2022 if they pay by direct debit.
It has warned those who don’t pay by direct debit that their rebate could take longer, but that the council will be in touch directly with those affected.
In Tameside, residents who pay their council tax by direct debit can expect payments between April and May.
For those that don’t pay by direct debit, similarly to those in Wigan, residents will need to apply for the rebate – the council said it will make an application form available on its website ‘as soon as possible’ for those affected.
Trafford will be paying their residents who pay by direct debit the rebate automatically from April.
For those who don’t pay by direct debit, the council will arrange an alternative payment method, but has not yet announced how or when this will be done.
In Wigan borough, if you pay your council tax by direct debit, you’ll automatically receive the payment in the bank account you pay your council tax from from the end of April.
If you do not pay your council tax by direct debit in Wigan, but instead by cash, cheque, over the phone, via a Post Office or other methods, you will need to apply to the council for the payment.
From May 2022, Wigan residents who pay their council tax in this way will be invited to make an application to the council and submit their bank account details to the authority. These will then be verified and payment can be expected from June 2022.
