A SHOPPING centre has proudly announced it has won a 5th International Green Apple Award for environmental best practice.
Spinning Gate Shopping Centre, in conjunction with their waste management partner B&M Waste Services Limited, celebrated previous success in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 when they achieved Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice for their combined waste management achievements.
International competition
Spinning Gate Shopping Centre are delighted to receive their 5th award whilst competing against more than 500 other nominations in the International Green Awards.
The award entry provided details of all the environmental successes achieved during the year, along with recycling initiatives the centre has implemented.
Cutting waste - what Spinning Gate has done
These successes included reducing the total volume of waste produced from site by 53 per cent since 2017, a reduction of 50,190kg of waste.
All of the waste processed from site was diverted from landfill for the fifth consecutive year.
The centre reduced its energy consumption by 15 per cent, saving 18,803kWh from the previous year.
During the year, the centre implemented a number of environmental initiatives to contribute to its fifth award, including recycling 720kg of metal waste, recycling 331 x wooden pallets and recycling 6,171 plastic coat hangers.
In addition 1,247 diaries & wall planners to a local charity, donating 607 books, 2 fridges, 5 microwaves, 14 bags of coffee grounds, 84 milk cartons, 452 puzzles, 78 balls of wool & 15 bath togs to local charities.
The centre recycles used postage stamps, inviting shoppers to drop off their used stamps, forwarding them on to Kicks Count charity for recycling.
The centre also donated 136 pens, 51 batteries & 6 printer cartridges for recycling.

"These awards are internationally recognised to improve environmental achievements, encouraging the efficient use of resources & supporting social benefits through community engagement."
The Green Apple Awards are run by The Green Organisation, an international, independent, non-profit group that formed in 1994 to recognise, reward & promote environmental best practice around the world.
Spinning Gate Shopping Centre will be presented with their trophy & certificate at a glittering awards ceremony at the Houses of Parliament, London on November 21.
