TYLDESLEY star Ella Toone assisted two goals as Manchester United women thrashed Liverpool 6-0 at Leigh Sports Village.

A record-breaking crowd for a women's football game in Leigh took place on Sunday, January 15, with 7,666 fans witnessing the six-goal thriller.

Dominant from the first whistle, Toone almost scored after a couple of minutes and goals from Lucia Garcia, Alessia Russo, and Hayley Ladd put United 3-0 up at the break.

With two assists from Toone, United cruised to victory as Martha Thomas, Rachel Williams and an Emma Koivisto own goal increased their tally to six.

The emphatic win pushes United, who have played at the Sports Village since 2019, up to second in the table in the Women's Super League.

They are three points off leaders Chelsea with a game in hand.

With the Sports Village recording its highest-ever attendance for a women's game, this follows the trend of increasing turnouts across the country.

Following the Lionesses' Euros success last summer, attendances in the Women's Super League are up 200% across the country, compared to last season.

Kelly Simmons, the director of the women’s professional game, hailed the record-breaking first half of the season before the winter break.

She said: "The Lionesses’ victory propelled the women’s game in this country to new levels, and it was important for us to capture and capitalise on that momentum.

“It has often been said that a successful women’s England team will help generate interest in the domestic game.

"This is certainly true, and I have been really overwhelmed by the response we have seen from fans – new and old – in the first half of the season.

“I am delighted to reveal that since the season commenced, we have seen almost 300,000 spectators attend matches across the Barclays Women’s Super League.

“We are currently averaging almost 6,000 fans a week in the Barclays Women’s Super League as we go into the final league fixtures of 2022 – which is up over 200 per cent on this time last year.

"This just highlights how much appetite there is for world-class women’s league football."
