After the vehicle failed to stop, the driver allegedly led police on a short chase before driving into a dead end on Meanly Road, towards Astley.
The man is said to have then evacuated his vehicle and led police on a foot pursuit, before eventually being detained.
After further checks, the van was found to be displaying false plates and is alleged to have been stolen from Bolton last week.
The driver was arrested for theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, failing to stop, and driving without insurance.
GMP officers later announced that Benjamin Nuttall, of no fixed address, has been charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving with no insurance, and aggravated taking without owner's consent.
He has been remanded to appear in court on Thursday, April 27.
