AS LEYTHERS get set to head down south for this Saturday's Rugby League Challenge Cup final where else could we turn to this week but the last time the club triumphed at Wembley?
Here is a shot of the victorious Leigh team with the Challenge Cup at Wembley in 1971 following their famous win over Leeds.
Leigh beat Leeds 24-7 in front of 85,514 people beneath the Twin Towers on Saturday, May 15, 1971.
Lance Todd Trophy winner Alex Murphy kicked two drop goals and was famously stretchered off after a clash with Leeds player, Syd Hynes, who became the first man to be sent off in a Challenge Cup final.
That day 52 years ago was Leigh's last appearance at Wembley, as the club make sits return to the national stadium this weekend.
It also came just over half a century after Leigh's only previous Challenge Cup final appearance when they won the famous trophy for the first time back in 1921.
Leigh defeated Halifax 13-0 in the final that year, which was played at The Cliff, Broughton, in front of a crowd of 25,000.
Leigh will be followed by thousands of fans to the capital as they look to make it a third cup final success on Saturday as they face Hull Kingston Rovers.
