It is believed that the man was threatening to harm himself so a police negotiator was called.
A police cordon was put in place while officers dealt with the incident, with a police van, police cars, and a Tactical Aid Unit all present.
Police say there was no wider threat to the public, and the man has now been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "At approximately 3pm yesterday (Monday 23 October), officers were called to reports of a concern for welfare of a male at an address on George Street in Atherton.
"A cordon was put in place whilst officers responded.
"A 53-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage to a residence."
