LABOUR continues to dominate Wigan Council after a successful evening in last night's local elections.

With councillors up for election all across the country, one out of three seats in each of Wigan borough’s 25 wards were up for grabs last night (Thursday, May 2).

The elections are being viewed as the final test of public opinion before the next General Election, and in the borough, it was a chance for opposition parties and independent councillors to make a dent in Labour's dominance on the council.

This dominance continued last night as Labour made one gain from the Conservatives in Lowton East, with the election of Mike Smith leaving the Tories with just one councillor across the borough.

Independent councillor Tony Whyte picked off a Labour seat in Ince, and all other seats remained the same, leaving Labour with 64 seats, independents with 6, Independent Network with 4 and Conservatives with 1 seat.
