AFTER weeks of campaigning, the day has come for residents across Leigh and Atherton to decide who will be their next Member of Parliament.
With Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announcing a General Election a month ago, candidates have been vying for support across the newly formed Leigh and Atherton constituency.
Voters will also head to polling stations in Wigan, Makerfield, and Worsley and Eccles, as well as an extra council by-election in Leigh South.
As James Grundy announced that he will not stand following his shock victory in 2019, this has left six new candidates looking to become the MP for Leigh and Atherton.
Candidates for Leigh and Atherton
- Labour: Jo Platt
- Conservative: Michael Winstanley
- Liberal Democrats: Stuart Thomas
- Green: Amelia Jones
- Reform: George Woodward
- English Democrats: Craig Buckley
The candidates from each party have each set out their pledges in the Journal, including Jo Platt's focus on reviving high streets, George Woodward's 'smart immigration' focus, and Michael Winstanley's campaign for 'Lexit' and the discontinuation of the Greater Manchester Mayor role.
Stuart Thomas has pledged to "end the sewage dumping scandal" while Amelia Jones has said she will "push for a fairer society and climate justice".
English Democrat Craig Buckley has a focus on tackling immigration and creating an English-only parliament.
