Leigh: Plans submitted for eight affordable bungalows on vacant plots

Submitted by Pozzoni Architecture, the bungalows are proposed on three vacant plots of land around Westbourne Avenue, Yates Street, and Holt Street in Leigh.

With a combination of 1, 2, and 3 bedroom bungalows proposed, developers believe that the site "represents an excellent opportunity to deliver much needed residential accommodation [...] that is affordable and accessible".

One of the plots of land, on Yates Street, was formerly occupied by eight semi-detached houses before they were demolished in 2003.

The exact reason for this demolition "has not been determined", while there are issues with a very narrow access road and "an area of substance or small sinkhole on the site".

The developers say that the bungalows, situated between Kirkhall Lane and Atherleigh Way, will "provide an appealing and homely environment" for future residents, and "have been designed to be sensitive to the local context".

In a design and access statement submitted to Wigan Council, the developers say: "The overall ambition is to redevelop the site and provide a total of eight new affordable bungalows, all with dedicated, off street parking and garden amenity space provided.

"We believe this will be a high quality, sustainable, flexible, inclusive and affordable housing proposal to meet a significant housing need that makes effective use of the land and the opportunities available.

"We believe the proposal has been well designed and considered to meet the requirements of the council and planners."

If approved, Wigan Council will be the registered provider for the affordable housing scheme.
