PASSENGERS are facing travel chaos this evening (Friday, August 9) as all train services running to and from Manchester are cancelled or disrupted.

Due to a fault with the signalling system at Manchester Piccadilly all lines are blocked.

Northern has said that “severe disruption” can be expected across the network in the North West area.

National Rail announced  that trains running to from and through this station may be delayed by more than 60 minutes, cancelled or revised with the disruption expected to last until the end of the day.

Posting on X, a Northern spokesperson said: “Due to a fault with the signalling system at Manchester Piccadilly all lines are blocked. Network Rail are aware of the fault and engineers are expected on site at shortly. Due to the impact of this fault, severe disruption can be expected across the Northern network this evening in the North West area.

“Northern tickets may be used at no additional costs on board Manchester Metrolink Tram services between Manchester City Centre and Altrincham / Manchester Airport / Ashton-under-Lyne until further notice. To assist customers in completing their journey, the following Bee Network / Stagecoach Buses will operate from Manchester Piccadilly: 192 - Service to Stockport / Hazel Grove (Change at Stockport for services to Marple) 201 - Service to Hadfield 205 - Service towards Gorton.”

Transport for Wales between Milford Haven / Cardiff Central / Birmingham International / Chester and Manchester Piccadilly and also between Llandudno and Manchester Airport

You can use your ticket on Metrolink services between Manchester city centre and Altrincham / Manchester Airport / Ashton-under-Lyne at no extra cost.

To assist customers in completing their journey, the following Bee Network / Stagecoach Buses will operate from Manchester Piccadilly:

  • 192 - Service to Stockport / Hazel Grove (change at Stockport for services to Marple)
  • 201 - Service to Hadfield
  • 205 - Service to Gorton
