A man has been jailed for life for murdering his partner, a “dearly loved mum, daughter and sister.”
David Liptrot, 56, stabbed Caroline Gore several times after they had gone out to various pubs in the Leigh and Atherton areas on Sunday October 29 last year.
Ms Gore was found dead at her home at Douglas House, Wigan by police and paramedics the next day, with Liptrot, of Shelley Close, Coppull having since been convicted of her murder.
Senior Investigating Officer, Duncan Thorpe from GMP's Major Incident Team, said: "This is such a sad loss of life.
“No one should suffer at the hands of their partner and this is a very horrific and sad case where Caroline lost her life in a violent domestic attack.
"Our thoughts are with Caroline’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.
"I know the sentence passed here today won't bring Caroline back to be with her family, but I do hope it will go some way to giving them all some form of closure in knowing what happened to Caroline and that Liptrot will be behind bars for a very long time."
Liptrot and Ms Gore had been in an on and off relationship for around two years before her death and that there was a history of domestic violence between them.
Liptrot had been banned from contacting Ms Gore by a restraining order but on October 29 last year they had visited several pubs together.
After an argument Ms Gore left Liptrot in the pub and he went back to her flat and waited for her to come home.
Ms Gore returned home around at 11pm where Liptrot was waiting and he attacked her in her bathroom, stabbing her seven times and leaving her on the floor.
Liptrot left the flat to stay at a friend’s house and the next day he got rid of the knives and clothes he had been wearing.
During the police investigation, a member of the public told officers Liptrot was heard talking about the murder in a nearby pub.
He was heard to say he had “stabbed someone eight times” and that “she was dead” and later said: “when you have problems, you have to get rid.”
Shortly after, Liptrot was found by police in the pub and arrested on suspicion of murder.
At Manchester Crown Court Liptrot pleaded not guilty to murder, claiming a loss of self-control and denied he intended to cause Ms Gore serious injury, but admitted manslaughter.

But after a three-week trial he was convicted of murder.
This week Judge Suzanne Goddard KC jailed Liptrot for life with a minimum term of 20 years.
In a tribute to Ms Gore, her family said: "We as a family are heartbroken and saddened at the loss of Caroline.
“A dearly loved mum, daughter and sister has been tragically taken way too soon.
"At this time we as a family ask for privacy and show respect for Caroline and her memory."
