DETECTIVES have charged a Wigan man for his alleged role in the violent disorder in Southport this summer.

With misinformation spread online following the fatal stabbings of three young girls in Southport, riots and disorder erupted across the country in July.

Some of the largest episodes of disorder took place in Southport and Liverpool, with several police officers injured during the events,

Merseyside Police have since arrested 151 people in connection with the events, with 105 charged and 81 people sentenced to a collective 165 years and three months in prison.

Following further investigations into the Merseyside riots, officers have now charged Christopher Dean, of Byfleet Close, Winstanley, with violent disorder.

The 35-year-old is alleged to have thrown wheelie bins at police officers during the Southport. He will appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court this morning (Wednesday, November 20).

A man of no fixed abode has also been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder, burglary, and assault an emergency worker in relation to incidents in Liverpool City Centre.

The 37-year-old is alleged to have thrown a missile at the head of an officer, causing injury. He is also alleged to have let off fire extinguishers at members of the public, as well as stealing items from a shop on Church Street. He is in custody awaiting interview.
