A COMMUNITY group has raised £750 to fund a new defibrillator.

Excel in Life CIC on Silk Street recently secured this lifesaving device after realising the closest one was too far away.

Julie Whalley from the group said: "We realised that in an emergency the nearest defib was at the Spinning Gate Shopping Centre, which just felt like it was too far, should we ever need it.

"In an emergency every minute counts."

Anyone in need can dial 999 and will be given an access code by the emergency services.

Trina Ellam from the group said: "As a Community Interest Company, we thought it was crucial to ensure that the whole community should have access to it, if there was an emergency."

The group serves the community by running a day service commissioned by Wigan Council, to support people with additional needs.

The qualified staff run various skill-building sessions including hair and beauty, jewellery making, crafts, IT, and independent living.

They also met with Jo Platt MP to discuss their work with those with additional needs.

"Leigh should be proud of the work that community groups like this are doing to support others."

The group also raises money for St Rocco’s Hospice in Warrington, which is close to the heart of their colleague Judith Pugh.
