JAZZ master Ian Darrington has added another another string to his bow.

Dr Darrington, founder of the Wigan International Jazz Festival and co-founder of the Wigan Jazz Club, has been recognised in this year’s Parliamentary Jazz Awards for his work in education.

Last Wednesday night the House of Commons hosted its seventh Parliamentary Jazz Awards which aim to encourage a deeper understanding and appreciation of jazz.

There Ian was presented with his trophy following a long and distinguished career.

In March this year Ian retired from his post as Director of Jazz Performance for Wigan Council Education Department, having joined their instrumental teaching staff in September 1977.

He held the post of musical director of the award winning Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra for over 20 years.

The Parliamentary Awards noted: “There can be no doubt of Ian’s outstanding contribution to jazz education in Wigan, not only for young people, but also for the wider community through his work as founder and director of the Wigan International Jazz Festival and co-founder of the Wigan Jazz Club. Ian’s work has acted as an inspirational model not only in the UK but globally.”

Following the awards Ian said: “It was a lovely occasion and obviously I am delighted to be recognised in this way, particularly with so many major players in the field.

“For me, it’s just a thrill to be involved in such a vibrant industry. I’m already looking forward to this year’s Wigan International Jazz Festival which starts on 14 July.”

Other winners on the night included a special award for Dame Cleo Laine, Brian Kellock was awarded Jazz Musician of the Year, while John Fordham was named Jazz Journalist of the Year.

Michael Connarty MP, All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group Co-Chairman, said: “Each year we are knocked out by the consistent quality of the UK jazz scene, with long serving players, writers, educators and promoters being joined by a new generation of talent. We hope our Parliamentary Jazz Awards help encourage this creativity and draw others to share our enjoyment of British jazz.”
