MATTHEW McKiernan took 8-35 and hit a half-century for Leigh on Saturday but still ended up on the losing side as Rainhill defended their modest total of 140 all out.
The former Derbyshire all-rounder's heroics were all in vain as Leigh were bowled out for 87 with just one other player reaching double figures in the Liverpool Competition Premier League clash.
Leigh’s difficult start to the season continued on Sunday against Burnley in the first round of the Lancashire Cup. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Leigh reached 159-9 with Ben Smith's unbeaten 45 the highlight. The visitors reached the target in the 31st over for the loss of five wickets.
