DISCUSSIONS are taking place with regards to hosting the planned 2025 rugby league Ashes series against Australia in England next autumn.
Under the existing international calendar, England are due to play a three-Test Ashes series in Australia next year, with the Kangaroos to return to England in 2028.
However, that could all change – and England could be hosting the Kangaroos for a three-test Ashes series for the first time since 2003.
Having failed to meet in the most recent World Cup, it is now eight years since England hosted Australia – that being the 2016 Four Nations game watched by 35,569 at London Stadium.
In a statement issued today by RL Commercial they state: “We can confirm initial conversations have been held with the ARLC about the possibility of an historic Ashes Series being played in England in 2025.
“We are excited by the possibility of bringing the Kangaroos to these shores for a three-match series for the first time in over 20 years, and we are starting work on the feasibility of such a tour.
“We believe this would be welcomed by our England team, by British Rugby League supporters, by the British sporting public, and by the current generation of Australia players who would relish the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of so many great players of the past.”
The Kangaroos had been scheduled to tour in 2020 for a three-Test series, ahead of the 2021 World Cup, but that was scuppered by the Covid pandemic.
If it is held in the UK there will be significant speculation around venues chosen to maximise attendance and project the sport in the best light.
London venues have traditionally drawn big crowds, and there is a chance that Everton's new ground will be considered along with Old Trafford, Etihad and Bolton's stadium - and the traditional heartlands venues.
