ASTLEY and Tyldesley Cycle Speedway Club hosted the fourth annual Women’s British Club Championship at Gin Pit on Saturday.
Defending champions Leicester held off a strong challenge from Ipswich to retain the title, with Wednesfield taking third place.
Astley & Tyldesley, Hethersett and Sheffield had their own strong tussle throughout the match to determine the lower positions and it was A&T who made a late run to take fourth place overall, with Michelle Hughes leading the way.
That was a good achievement, considering that only Laura Watson competes regularly at cycle speedway. Newcomers Beren Airstone and Helen Brown both rode well for A&T.
Result: Leicester 69, Ipswich 65, Wednesfield 55, Astley and Tyldesley 39, Hethersett 36, Sheffield 29.
A&T were in action in the second round of the Manchester League Grand Prix series at Bury.
Some good racing saw A&T finish second out of four teams in both the senior and junior matches.
This Sunday will see a busy day of cycle speedway action at Gin Pit, where A&T will host the Northern Cup meeting featuring all eight northern clubs. Racing starts at noon.
