LEIGH swimmer Heather Frederiksen declared her BT Paralympic World Cup exploits a case of mission accomplished despite having to settle for silver in Manchester on Saturday.
The 25-year-old has had her share of setbacks of late and has only recently returned to the international scene having served a six-month ban after a positive drugs test last year.
Add to that recent injury problems as well as an intensive warm-weather training camp and Frederiksen would be forgiven for not being at her best at the Manchester Aquatics Centre.
But having grabbed 50m freestyle silver – the event in which she’s the European record holder – in 31.62secs, the 2009 Paralympic gold medallist was all smiles.
“I wanted to break 32 seconds so I’m really happy to have got down to 31.6,” said Frederiksen, who also won two silver medals and a bronze at Beijing 2008.
“I only lost by 0.01 but all I really cared about was a good time and I can’t believe I’ve gone so quickly.
“I’ve had a couple of problems with injury. My hip has been causing me problems, so it’s all the more reason to be happy with that time, especially as we’ve just come back from a tough training camp in Majorca.”
Frederiksen will now turn her attentions to this summer’s European Championships where she will hope to collect some silverware after two of the four medals she won at the competition in 2009 were stripped from her following her positive test. But rather than focus too much on the European Championships in Berlin, Frederiksen revealed London 2012 is all she’s concerned about at present.
“I’m looking forward to Berlin in four weeks and, with my time in Manchester, I think I should be in good shape to do well,” added Frederiksen.
“But even though it’s the biggest event of our season, everything is about London now. Doing well in Berlin is important, but mainly as a stepping stone to 2012.
“I’m already looking forward to the trials and trying to get my place in that team. The fact they will be held in the Aquatics Centre in London is great for us as well.”
Overall, Great Britain had to settle for Paralympic World Cup bronze.
BT Paralympic World Cup took place in Manchester from 23-28 May with elite international athletes competing in Swimming, Athletics and Wheelchair Basketball. Go to btparalympicworldcup.com for more information.
